Features: It is 2 km long tunnel including 3 floors in deep underground. This area was a fortress of the North Social Republic in 7 years in America War.

 

Vinh Moc was the first place was destroyed by America’s bomb of the air force trying to defeat the North region. This tunnel is one of the interesting site of the famous DMZ route (demilitarized zone) which has attracted many domestic and international visitors especially U.S. military veterans. They come to behold this characteristic exploit, a symbolic proof of sacrifices, hardships and  bravery for freedom of Vinh Moc people in particular and Vietnamese in general.

 

Vinh Moc tunnel was dug in two years with 6000 cubic meters of soil. The tunnel is about 2 km long divided to 3 floors: the first floor is about 13 m underground, the second floor is 15 m and the third is 23 m including 13 gates which are also louvers (7 gates lead to the sea and 6 to the hill). The tunnel was designed as the underground village with 94 households, wells to supply enough for people’s needs, a hall with the capacity of 60 people, new boards, WC, maternity hospital, surgery room, Hoang Cam stove (this kind of stove can be used underground and restrain smoke)…

 

The strong impression when coming here is the sentence in the displayed room: “ To be or not to be” the best well – known quotation from Hamlet play of William Shakespeare. This sentence is even more meaningful because of close photos of a verdant village taken on February 1965, the right next to is the photo of this destroyed village,  a photo of 11 children were born in darkness, a photo of 4 guerilla girls in white shirt singing optimistically… 

 

Today visit Vinh Moc tunnel watching lush rubber and pepper plantation nobody can imagine about  30 years ago this area was a steel fortress of Northern Region Social Republic through 7 years (1966 – 1972) against the fierce America war . Vinh Moc is not only the border area of the Northern region but also a place of gathering foods, weapons for Con Co island which is the important observed location to Vinh Linh sea. Therefore the U.S. force throw tens of thousands of tons of bomb to this land and declared "we're going to bomb them back into the Stone Age".

 

In 1976, Ministry of culture and information recognized Vinh Moc tunnel is national vestige and put in the list of important relics. To ensure the safety of travelers, the local government restored, reinforced landslide tunnel by concrete, made electric to the road.
