Tiger arena

Tiger arena is a relic of Hue vestige’s complex, located in Truong Da hamlet, Thuy Bieu ward, Hue city. This place is tiger’s colosseum which cannot be found anywhere all over the world. Under Nguyen dynasty this arena was a place of fierce battle between tiger and elephant aim at worshipping God during festival and entertain the Royal class and the civilians as well.

Tiger Arena

The Tiger arena was built in 1830 on the southern bank of Perfume river. It is about 4km from Hue city centre. This is a giant characteristic design like a rampart. The wall includes two layers of wall making the concentric circles which was built by brick and coat with mortar. The wall is 1.1 m thick at the foot and 0. 5 m at peak. The outer wall’s diameter is 45 m, circumference is 140 m, the height is 4. 5 m. The inner wall’s parameter in turn is 35m, 110m and 6 m. The distance of two walls is 4 m at foot and 3 m at peak.
 
There are two stairs at the foot of the wall, the first one has 20 steps for King and the royal. Grandstand is rectangle shape with 96 square meters area, 15 meters high. The second stair has 15 steps for soldiers and citizens. The annual battle between elephant and tiger is the entertainment of King under Ngyen dynasty. The last fight took place in 1904 under King Thanh Thai.
