In 1965 – 1966, the U.S military and Republic of Vietnam’s force constructed Khe Sanh to a biggest base of the defensive route on 9 road which was considered as “impossible attacks”.

 

Khe Sanh combat locates at a red soil valley about 400m above sea level surrounding by mountain. This is one of three “God’s eyes” (Khe Sanh, Vay village and Ta Con base) of Mc Namara electric fence. At Khe Sanh combat many fierce battles took place in 9 road campaign – Khe Sanh in 1968, 9 road – Southern Laos campaign in 1971, the vice president Johnson asked chairman of the U.S Military Assistance Advisory Group for the commitment of keeping Khe Sanh.

 

Ta Con base was the core of the defensive route of the US force, it is 5 km long, 3km wide including a 3000 m runway assuring the activities of C-130 Hercules aircrafts and military helicopters. It also had the system of tunnel, ramparts, barrier, and dense minefields everywhere.
